March 7 @ 11:00 - 12:30

Join us for this unique tour that
combines a visit to the most
beautiful Milanese Church, San
Maurizio al Monastero Maggiore,
and a walking tour in the nearby
district to discover tales of powerful
Milanese renaissance ladies.
The tour will start with the San Maurizio Church, a gem in Corso
Magenta belonging to the Monastery
Maggiore of the Benedectine
nuns. They were once the most
important convent in Milan and
favored by Milan’s wealthiest
families, who generously bequeathed
the monastery its precious
Inside, you will discover the secrets
of both the public and private
sections, immersing yourselves in
the enchanting atmosphere that
has earned this church the title of
Milan’s own Sistine Chapel. Guided
by the masterpieces of the Lombard
artist Bernardino Luini, influenced
by the legendary Leonardo da Vinci,
the frescoes paint a vivid tribute to
feminine beauty and the spiritual
lives of its inhabitants. You will
also hear the compelling story of
Milan’s femme fatale, the Countess
of Challant, whose legacy inspired a
Verdi opera centuries later. After the church visit, the tour will
continue on Corso Magenta, tracing
the ancient Roman road from
medieval Porta Vercellina. You’ll
witness the remnants of Emperor
Maximian’s fourth-century palace,
a testament to Milan’s imperial
past. Near the formidable Sforza
Castle, you will discover tales of
Italy’s first ladies, fierce in their
pursuit of power. Our tour concludes
at the Teatro Piccolo, standing on
the storied grounds of Palazzo
Carmagnola, once the residence of
Cecilia Gallerani—an intellectual,
artist’s muse, and a luminary in
Sforza Milan.
