Meet the Artist – Adrian Paci at MUDEC with MiArt

April 4 @ 10:30 - 11:30

In the context of MiArt (Milan International Modern
and Contemporary Art Fair) and in collaboration with
Galleria Kaufmann Repetto, Benvenuto members are
invited to a special viewing of Adrian Paci’s on-site
installation Il vostro cielo fu mare, il vostro mare fu cielo
(Your sky was sea, your sea was sky). The installation has
been specifically planned for MUDEC’s Agora, and is
a teaser for the exhibition Travelogue. Stories of Travel,
Migration and Diaspora.
The artist himself will be present to guide participants
through this immersive
space—a testament to
the quest for freedom,
the harshness of reality
and the ethical reflection
to which we are all part.
Inspired by his own personal
experience, Adrian Paci has
combed through Italian and
international newspapers
and created an archive of
the tragedies which befall
those seeking emancipation
through exile—often finding death instead. The artist
seeks to highlight the thread which unites all such
stories: the sea.
His installation transforms the space of the Agora—
whose organic shape is similar to that of a wave—with
its 250 stained glass windows into a mosaic of blue-
green hues (darker in the lower bands, lighter in the
upper ones) which, combined with the many variations
of light and shade that naturally occur throughout
the day, mimic the colours of the sea. Each fragment
of the seemingly abstract composition is a detail from
photographs published in newspaper articles about
migrant shipwrecks in the Mediterranean.
After the viewing, participants may choose to stay
and visit the Travelogue exhibition, and/or MUDEC’s
permanent collection (both free of charge). We could
then gather for lunch at a nearby restaurant.
Time: 10:30am
Venue: MUDEC, via Tortona 56 (MM Porta Genova,
Santagostino, Coni Zugna)
Cost: free
The Artist: Adrian Paci (Shkodër, 1969) currently resides
and works in Milan. He is an internationally renowned
artist and has held numerous personal exhibitions in a
number of prestigious museums and institutions around
the world. Using media such as video, installation,
painting, and photography, Paci’s work reflects upon
human condition—addressing issues such as loss, exile,
identity, memory and collective history—and explores the
complex social, political and cultural dynamics of today’s
world. In an ongoing, subtle celebration of everyday life,
Paci reveals how our experiences are interconnected and
how they are shaped by our environmental boundaries. He
is represented by Galleria Kaufmann Repetto in Milan.
