Instead of Como or Bergamo, let’s
go for a day trip by train to novara!
novara is a very nice and ancient
city, founded by the romans. it is
only 50 km from Milan. its histor-
ical center is characterized by long
arcaded streets, elegant palaces,
prestigious and ancient buildings. we
will discover both contemporary and
nineteenth-century novara. like in
Torino, with its famous Mole anton-
elliana, here we can admire the ma-
jestic dome of the Basilica of san Gaudenzio, (Patron
saint of the town) designed by the architect Alessan-
dro Antonelli. he was born close to novara. Then we
will see Piazza Martiri with the majestic Teatro Caccia,
the Palazzo del Mercato, the neoclassical Cathedral, the
Broletto courtyard, the heart of medieval novara, and
then Palazzo Bellini, the symbol of the risorgimento.
we’ll also discover the specialties of novara: for those
with a sweet tooth, a stop at the historic Biscottificio
Camporelli where it will be possible to taste the very
light biscuits of novara. other famous specialties: four
famous doC wines: the Ghemme, the Fara, the sizza-
no, the Boca. The blue veined gorgonzola cheese, the
salame d’oca, and the ‘riso’!! The most famous type
of rice in the world is from novara and its surround-
ings. in october, also from the train,
you can admire the beautiful gold
colored ricefields.
Program: tour of the town with a
local guide (in English) until mid-
day. Then we’ll have lunch in an old
trattoria: Il Circolo della Paniscia.

Then in the afternoon, perhaps we
will visit an exhibition.
Meeting point: at stazione Centrale at 8:45am, with a
train to novara at 9:15am
Return trip: from novara at 5:05pm, arriving at
5:45pm at Central station. (There is a train every
hour).
Cost: €45 per person (return train trip €14, lunch:
about €15 and guide in English, probably 15€ per per-
son—it depends on how many participants we will be.)
